Many women trek in Nepal on their own and have a good time. Like anywhere, it goes best with a bit of planning. This is practical advice, based on how we run our trips, for before you go and while you are on the trail.

Trekking solo versus walking alone
You can be a solo traveller without walking alone. Every trek we run is private and led by a government-licensed guide, so you are not on the trail by yourself. Your guide knows the route and looks after the lodges and your plan, and one porter is shared between two travellers. Our prices have a solo tier for a single traveller, for example 1,280 USD on the Annapurna Base Camp Trek.
Choose a route to match your experience
If this is your first Himalayan trek, start with something moderate, like the Langtang Valley or Annapurna Base Camp. For something gentler, the Panchase and Begnas trek and the Pikey Peak Homestay Trek both stay in family homestays. Remote routes need more preparation. Restricted areas such as Manaslu and Upper Mustang used to need at least two trekkers on the permit, but since March 2026 a solo traveller can get the permit on her own, as long as she walks with a licensed guide, so these routes are open to you too.
Using a guide
A licensed guide is the single biggest safety step. Ask any company who your guide will be before you book, and what experience they have on your route. Our booking page explains how a private trip works.
Everyday safety
Rooms on our standard tier are twin-share. If you want a room of your own, ask us when you book, so we can tell you what is possible on your route. Keep your valuables with you, tell someone at home your plan, check in when there is signal, and trust your own judgement about people you meet.
Insurance and health
Make sure your travel insurance covers high-altitude evacuation, and read about altitude sickness before you go. Tell your guide at once if you feel unwell, rather than pushing on.
Talk to us first
