Nar Phu Valley Trek is a remote mountain trekking in the Annapurna region of the Himalaya. This recent addition to the trekking adventures in Nepal offers a peaceful and adventurous walking exploration of the hidden mountain valleys. The adventure is a snack off from the famous Annapurna Circuit trail deeper into the Nar and Phu valleys.
Still under the restricted region, you will need a special permit to be able to go on this adventure. But the region is slowly opening up for the trekkers and the region is seeing more people on the trail. You want to enjoy the real mountain wilderness, can survive in the remoteness of the mountains without wi fi, phone reception, good food and good accommodation, you are on the right trip. In exchange of those sacrifices you make for a week, you will get an unbelievable joy of exploring the surreal beauty of the region.
As you enter and advance deeper into the valleys, you will trek through amazing landscapes with jagged cliffs. You will go past ancient villages with stone walls that have a rich Tibetan cultural influence rather than the Nepalese. Due to its geographical local near Tibet and being far away from villages in the lower elevation of Nepal, you will find Tibetan cultural more dominant in the region. You will feel like as if you are exploring some Tibetan land. The narrow trail feels solitary stretch through the mountains. As you trek northward towards Nar and Phu villages, you also have a chance of spotting Mountain goat and Blue Sheep.
Trek to Nar Phu Valley is certainly for the more adventurous and wilderness side of you to enjoy the remote yet unique cultural and mountain experience.

Kathmandu - Chamje
We are driving to the start point of the trek today. About 8 hours of drive takes us to Chamje village in the Marshyangdi river valley to stay overnight. The drive will introduce us with the rural atmosphere of Nepal that we are going to experience for few days from now.
Chamje - Dharapani
It is the first day of walking adventure on the trip. We walk to Dharapani today. Exploring about the river valley surroundings as we trek towards the destination reveals us the beautiful nature and views. We traverse the trail through beautiful greenery and settlements that are unique to this area. The lower river valley surroundings and civilization experience today is a gentle introduction to the higher mountain one that we are expecting on this adventure. We stay overnight today at Dharapani.
Dharapani – Koto
Annapurna Circuit trail still amazes us as we trek towards Koto via Bagarchhap. The mountainous landscapes of the surroundings also keep offering us wonderful sights as we walk to the destination. We reach Koto village to stay overnight today from where we will head towards our remote mountain destination tomorrow .
Koto – Meta
It is the day today to leave the luxury of Annapurna circuit trail. We will head to Meta today on the way towards Phu and Nar valleys in the remote mountains. It is a walk of about seven hours along the narrow and unmarked trail. We will enter the more peaceful and solitary region of the mountains. The trail will see fewer trekkers but will have more local people hauling stuff on their mules to the village.
Meta – Phu Village
Our trek in the region today takes us to the Phu village after a long walk for the day. The trek goes past landscapes, rivers and mountains. We also pass through historical landmarks where we can see and experience the existence of civilization in the past. The trail narrowly heads towards the Phu villages where we are going to stay overnight today.
Phu Village Exploration and Acclimatization
We spend whole day today exploring the Phu village and its surroundings. It is a part of acclimatizing at the climate and also a chance to explore the cultural and natural wonders of the village.
Phu Village to Nar
We will trek to another uniquely beautiful village in the region, Nar. This wonderful ancient village is another cultural wonder in the mountains. Around seven hours of trek takes us through the trail full of jagged cliffs. We descend and ascent throughout the walk today. It is a challenging yet beautiful day of walking the trail and crossing streams over suspension bridge to the village of Nar.
Acclimatization Day
We take another acclimatization day at Nar before heading to cross the Kang La pass. This day will also bring us the opportunity to explore cultural wonders of the village.
Nar – Kang la – Ngawal
Although walking through the region and exploring the cultural wonders has been an adventure to cherish, another highlight event of the trek is due today. We will trek over a high pass at the elevation of 5,322 meters above sea level. Crossing Kang La pass is a challenging adventure but is certainly a rewarding experience. It will be a walk of about eight hours to Ngawal via the pass.
Ngwal – Pisang
We finish the trek in the Nar Phu Valley and meet the Annapurna Circuit trail again at Pisang today. The busy Annapurna Circuit trail now will offer us with better options of food and accommodation and connection to the world. We enjoy the luxury at Pisang after so many days of trekking in the wilderness.
Pisang – Besi Sahar – Kathmandu
Early in the morning we will drive to Besi Sahar from Pisang and further drive back to Kathmandu. It is a long day drive in the off road of the mountains and later on the highway .
Trip Ends
As the last day on this beautiful adventure trip, we will drive you to the airport for your departure flight as per your flight schedule. If this is not your departure day, the service for this trip ends here. If you have extra days to spend in Nepal and need any other assistance, please do let us know. We will certainly help you in whatever way we can.
The walking adventure to the Nar Phu Valley goes through the trail that meanders up and down the mountains along the Annapurna circuit trail first. Later, it snacks off the circuit trail and enters to the remote mountains of the Nar Phu valley. Although this is not an extremely difficult trip, you will certainly feel some challenges of walking in the high altitude during the trip. We would rate it as a difficult trip in difficulty level as you will be walking over a high mountain pass of Kang La at the elevation of 5,320 meters above sea level.
Walking hours vary from day to day on this trip. You walk from 5-8 hours every day depending on the distance you cover. You can expect the walking hours to be around 6 hours on average.
Since it is walking adventure trip, you do not need any climbing skills, experience or equipment. However, you will need a high level of determination to traverse the mountain trail in the wilderness for several days. This is just a trekking trip, not a climbing adventure.
The walking route to the Annapurna Circuit is a well-trodden and popular trail but the trail off it towards the Nar Phu valley is less explored. You will find enough small only a few teahouses along the trail where you normally spend the overnights. You will stay in the villages that come along the trail. Teahouses along the route are basic lodges with accommodation and dining facilities where the trekkers spend overnight. These teahouses are comfortable but not super luxurious. The overnight places for each day are specified in the itinerary. However, your trip guide can change the overnight places on his/her sole discretion if s/he thinks it necessary for your comfort and better experience.
Dal Bhat is the staple food in the mountains. This combo of rice, lentil soup, vegetables, curry etc. is available everywhere you go. This remote area trekking mostly serves Dal Bhat. However, as long as you are in the Annapurna Circuit trail, you can enjoy varieties of food to choose from. We highly recommend you to go for vegetarian food during the trek.
When you go for the walking adventure trip, you will pack two different bags – one big backpack that your porter will carry for you and the other, a small daypack for yourself to carry with necessary things that you need for the day. You can refer to our Things to Carry page for a complete guide on what you need to have when you are in the mountains.
