Tamang Heritage Trek is a spellbinding cultural trekking trip in the Langtang region. Although it’s a trekking trip in the mountains of Nepal, it doesn’t go too high into elevation unlike other trips like Langtang Valley Trek or Langtang Gosainkunda Trek in this region.
You trek through the beautiful cultural trail that takes you into different ethnic Tamang settlements where you can get an incredible cultural immersion. Looking closely into the living style of the ethnic mountain tribe, Tamang, you will have a chance to get some insights on their culture and traditions. This wonderful cultural adventure stays to the lower foothills of the Langtang region and allows you to enjoy the charm of the region without worrying about the issues that altitude could bring.

Kathmandu – Syabrubensi
We drive to Syabrubesi, 122 kilometers northwest of Kathmandu. This is where we are going to start the trekking adventure from. It will take us around 8 hours to reach the destination. We will get to enjoy the beauty of the rural Nepal as we drive along the highway through several villages and towns.
Syabrubesi – Gatlang
We set off on the very first day of trekking part. We trek to Gatlang today via Goljung village. The trail walking today brings in sight the majestic views of mountains like Lantang Lirung, Shishapangma, Ganesh Himal and many other fascinating landscapes. When we reach Gatlang, we can explore and immerse into the beauty of this small ethnic settlement of Tamang people. It is the first day of beautiful experience of walking on the ethnic Tamang heritage trail.
Gatlang – Tatopani
The second day on the Tamang heritage trail takes us to Tatopani today. Although the trek goes higher into the elevation, the first section of the stretch descends. We pass through a hydro power dam – Chilime Hydro Power Dam – and then start walking up towards Tatopani. Tatopani really stood to its name – hot water – before the devastating earthquake. The village used to have natural hot spring where the trekkers could take a soothing bath to chase the tiredness away but it no longer exists there after the earthquake.
Tatopani – Thuman
We trek to Thuman today via Nagthali (3,165m) – the highest point we reach on this trek. On the very first part of the walk, we start ascending towards the pass via Brimdang viallge. We get an overwhelming view of the mountain peaks when we reach the pass. Astounding peaks of Langtang, Kerung, and Ganesh Himal etc. look extremely fascinating. Later, we descend to Thuman village for overnight stay. Thuman is a beautiful Tamang village along the trail that is normally used as stopover place. We can enjoy the wonderful Tamang culture and inspiring simplicity of their life style.
Thuman – Briddim
We trek to Briddim, another beautiful Tamang village in the region. We trek there via Lingling village. Once we reach Briddim, we can explore the ethnic culture and Buddhist spiritual vibrations there. We can visit a Buddhist monastery there and walk around the village to explore the culture and life style there. Briddim makes a typical Tamang cultural exploration and immersion .
Briddim – Lama Hotel
We trek to Lama Hotel today to meet the trekking route to Langtang valley. Our trek descends first to a small mountain stream and then goes uphill via Rimche. When we eventually reach Lama Hotel, we can meet the trekkers to the Langtang valley. Lama Hotel is a beautiful and usual overnight staying camp for the trekkers in the region.
Lama Hotel – Syabrubesi
It’s the last day of trekking portion of this trip. We are trekking back down to Syabrubesi today to end the trek. As we are walking back down on the same trail that we took on the way up, we will see the wonders of the place from a different angle and perspective and also will have chance to get closer to the cultural riches of the place. Once we are in Syabrubesi, we will have time to explore this beautiful, small town for the rest of the day as we are staying here tonight.
Sybrubesi – Kathmandu
We drive back to Kathmandu today. The walking adventure through the beautiful Tamang Heritage trail has brought us so many beautiful memories to Cherish and the drive will allow us time to take a look back at those moments in the mountains.
Trip Ends
As the last day on this beautiful adventure trip, we will drive you to the airport for your departure flight as per your flight schedule. If this is not your departure day, the service for this trip ends here. If you have extra days to spend in Nepal and need any other assistance, please do let us know. We will certainly help you in whatever way we can.
The walking adventure to the Tamang Heritage Trail goes through the trail that meanders up and down the mountains frequently. Although this is not an extremely difficult trip, you will certainly feel some challenges of walking up and down the mountain trails during the trip. We would rate it as a moderate trip in difficulty level. After the 2015 devastation of the area from the earthquake, new trails have been built in some of the areas.
Walking hours vary from day to day on this trip. You can expect the walking hours to be around 6 hours on average.
Since it is cultural walking adventure trip, you do not need any climbing skills, experience or equipment. However, you will need a high level of determination to traverse the mountain trail for several days. This is just a cultural trekking trip.
The Tamang Heritage Trail is a well-trodden trail. Although the route and teahouses were affected badly by earthquake in 2015, you will now find enough teahouses along the trail to spend the overnights. Teahouses along the route are basic lodges with accommodation and dining facilities where the trekkers spend overnight. These teahouses are comfortable but not super luxurious. This trip also uses homestay accommodations during the trip. The overnight places for each day are specified in the itinerary. However, your trip guide can change the overnight places on his/her sole discretion if s/he thinks it necessary for your comfort and better experience.
Dal Bhat is the staple food in the mountains. This combo of rice, lentil soup, vegetables, curry etc. is available everywhere you go. In addition to this Nepali food, you can enjoy momos, noodle soup (Thukpa), chowmein, pizza, sandwitch, Tibetan bread, soup etc. along the trail. Options of vegetarian and non-vegetarian foods are also available. We highly recommend you to go for vegetarian food during the trek.
When you go for the walking adventure trip, you will pack two different bags – one big backpack that your porter will carry for you and the other, a small daypack for yourself to carry with necessary things that you need for the day. You can refer to our Things to Carry page for a complete guide on what you need to have when you are in the mountains.
